Lightning over homes in Melbourne

It’s summertime in central Florida and with the season comes the return of frequent afternoon thunderstorms.

According to the CDC, Florida is considered the “lightning capital” of the country, with more than 2,000 lightning injuries over the past 50 years.

If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance of lightning, which can strike as far as 10 miles away from any rain. Look for shelter inside a home, large building, or a hard-topped vehicle right away.
