The Stone Magnet Middle School Safe Routes to School Sidewalk Improvements project is the latest effort by the City of Melbourne to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety citywide.
The City has completed construction of approximately 1.2 miles of new sidewalks surrounding Stone Magnet Middle School and the Eddie Lee Taylor Sr. Community Complex.
New sidewalks were installed along:
- Lipscomb Street (Florida Avenue to Reverend Nathaniel L. Harris Street),
- East side of Monroe Street (Spain Avenue to University Boulevard), and
- University Boulevard (Colbert Circle to Monroe Street).

In addition, traffic calming elements, such as Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons and traffic cushions, were also installed to further improve pedestrian safety and slow vehicles down on the approaches to new crosswalks located on Monroe and Lipscomb Streets.

The project was funded by Florida Department of Transportation’s Florida Safe Routes to School program, which aims to incentivize more children to walk and bicycle to school and make overall walking environment in the neighborhood safer.
Earlier this year, the City completed one mile of new sidewalks and pedestrian improvements along NASA Boulevard, between Eddie Allen Road and Gateway Drive. Currently under construction is the Melbourne Southwest Trails project, which is expected to add almost two miles of new sidewalks and trails along portions of Dairy Road, Florida Avenue, and University Boulevard.
