Pedestrians walking on new crosswalk on University Boulevard

A new crosswalk and additional safety features have been constructed on University Boulevard at Bruce D. Buggs Street (formerly Grant Street).

Pedestrians and bicyclists have been using the new crosswalk, and additional features are helping to improve safety on this stretch of University Boulevard.

University Boulevard is a four-lane undivided roadway with no median, and drivers here often exceeded the 30 mph posted speed limit.

To make it safer for pedestrians, the City of Melbourne constructed a raised, mid-block crosswalk over University Boulevard at Bruce D. Buggs Street and installed an eight-foot wide median in the roadway to provide pedestrian refuge. New rectangular rapid flashing beacons alert drivers to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

The access road that parallels University Boulevard was also realigned to further reduce conflict points for pedestrians and improve safety of the intersection.
