On August 30, 2026, at 2123 hours, the Melbourne Police Department was contacted in reference to a sedan that had become stuck on the railroad tracks north of Palmetto Avenue. A motorcyclist observed the driver inside the sedan and saw the railroad arms coming down, indicating a train was imminent. The motorcyclist parked his motorcycle and moved to assist the occupant of the sedan. The occupant of the sedan was able to exit his vehicle and move a safe distance away. The sedan was struck by a freight train. The train pushed the sedan into the motorcycle, as well as the crossing arm where the railroad tracks intersected Palmetto Avenue.
The driver of the sedan appeared uninjured during the incident, however was transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
Due to the damage to the crossing arm, Palmetto Avenue is shut down for an unknown length of time while repairs are conducted.
