The Melbourne Police Department has suspended use of the City's Flock license plate readers effective immediately. User accounts have been deactivated, and the Department is presently consulting with Flock Group Inc.to take the cameras offline.
Chief Gillespie stated, "This decision was not made lightly, as I understand the impact this will have on our operations and investigations. However, I am confident we will continue to serve our community with the utmost professionalism and the same tenacity to solve crime and locate missing and endangered subjects as we have always done. It's a standard that we have for ourselves and what the community expects of us."
The department will continue to work with Flock to have the cameras removed as soon as possible.
