The Melbourne Fire Department would like to remind residents about the rules regarding backyard fire pits that are in place to ensure your safety and the safety of your neighbors:

  • Only small recreational or cooking fires (fire pits, small campfires, etc.) are allowed in residential neighborhoods.
  • Only charcoal or firewood may be burned.
  • Residents are not allowed to burn yard debris, vegetative debris, pressure-treated wood, garbage, household items, plastics, pallets or other chemically treated items.
  • Fire pits may be no larger than 3 feet in diameter.
  • Flames may be no higher than 3 feet.
  • Fires must be kept 25 feet from structures and manned at all times with a water supply.
  • Please be mindful of smoke from your fire and do not let it become a nuisance to your neighbors.
