The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is implementing safety and operational improvements on U.S. 1 (State Road 5) from Myers Drive to the Crane Creek bridge in Melbourne and Palm Bay.

The project begins today, September 26, and will last through the summer of 2026.

The following lane closures are scheduled for September 28 to October 3:

  • Sunday, September 28 through Thursday, October 2, from 7:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.:  Motorists can expect outside double lane closures on southbound U.S.1 (S.R. 5) from south of Prospect Avenue to south of Robert J Conlan Boulevard.
  • Monday, September 29 through Friday, October 3, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.:  Motorists can expect outside single lane closures on southbound U.S.1 (S.R. 5) from south of Prospect Avenue to south of Robert J Conlan Boulevard.

These closures are needed for pavement marking activities.

About the Project

The project includes resurfacing the roadway to extend its life, drainage improvements, sidewalk enhancements, and safety upgrades.

Bicycle safety will be improved by restriping the travel lanes to provide 7-foot-wide buffered bicycle lanes from Myers Drive to University Boulevard. Pedestrian curb ramps will be reconstructed to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, and pedestrian signals will be upgraded. Enhanced lighting at signalized intersections is also included.
