Melbourne Police Officers responded to the intersection of Eau Gallie Boulevard and Highland Avenue at 5:33 a.m. this morning in reference to vehicle crash between a car and a bicyclist. They immediately located the bicyclist who appeared to have suffered significant injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The vehicle that struck the bicyclist was no longer on scene.
Investigators have determined the bicyclist was traveling west on Eau Gallie Boulevard, utilizing the designated bicycle lane. The suspect vehicle, a light-colored car, turned west on Eau Gallie Boulevard from the intersection of Pineapple Avenue. Witnesses told investigators the vehicle was driving erratically, swerving and squealing tires prior to the crash. The vehicle struck the bicycle and continued west on Eau Gallie Boulevard without stopping. The bicyclist ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators canvassed the area for security cameras which may have captured the incident. They noted several vehicles and pedestrians in the area near the time of the crash.
