The City of Melbourne is pleased to have available an automated building and fire inspection information system which was developed to efficiently place accurate information at the fingertips of contractors, inspectors, and homeowners.

By following a simple touch-tone telephone procedure, customers can request an inspection, obtain the results of an inspection, and check the overall status of a building permit.

Building Department personnel will perform next day inspections. Inspections are performed Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The Automated Inspection Request System is not available between the hours of 7 – 8 a.m. or 12 – 1 p.m. Every attempt will be made to complete an inspection when requested; however, the time of the inspection cannot be guaranteed.

Work should be complete and ready for inspection at the time the inspection is scheduled.  If the work is not ready or does not conform to Code or the approved drawings, a reinspection will be necessary. A reinspection fee will be charged each time it is necessary for the inspector to make additional inspections until the work is approved. Please see "Pre-inspection Requirements" for details on what work is necessary to be completed prior to an inspection.

Reinspection Fees

For reinspection of any building or structure where the building was not ready for inspection, the building contractor shall pay the following reinspection fees (This reinspection fee schedule also applies to Fence, Swimming Pool, and Roofing Permits.):

  • First reinspection: $25
  • Second reinspection: $50
  • Third reinspection: $100

For Electrical, Plumbing, Gas, and Mechanical Permits, the reinspection fee is $10.

For Sign Permits, the building contractor shall pay the following reinspection fees:

  • First reinspection: $10
  • Second reinspection: $25
  • Third reinspection (and for each reinspection thereafter): $50

Double Fees

When work which requires a permit is started without first obtaining a permit, all fees for said permit shall be doubled in accordance with Florida Building Code.
