The Melbourne Airport Authority, at its regularly scheduled meeting today, unanimously approved the ratification of a major land acquisition that will significantly shape the future of the Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB). The Airport has executed a purchase and sale agreement dated July 11, 2025, for a 176.36-acre parcel of land located at the northwest corner of the Airport, marking one of the largest land expansions in its history.

“This acquisition will have a multi-generational impact,” said Greg Donovan, A.A.E., Executive Director. “With this additional acreage, we can now pursue significant business opportunities, with airside accessibility contiguous to our three runways, that were previously constrained by space limitations. It ensures the airport has the capacity to grow for decades to come.”

The $28 million purchase aligns with long-standing strategic goals outlined in MLB’s original Master Plan and is a critical step forward in securing space for aeronautical development and long-term economic growth. The newly acquired land opens the door for future expansion of existing tenants and will support the recruitment of new businesses to the area. MLB contributes $3.1 billion annually to the local economy with 20,000 people on campus every day.

“As stewards of one of the community’s most valuable assets, the Board is focused on fostering long-term, sustainable development,” said Bill Potter, Chairman of the Melbourne Airport Authority “Over the last five decades, the Airport has consistently enhanced the region’s prosperity by bringing in high-quality companies. This transaction allows the airport to continue that legacy while positioning us for an even stronger future.”

Importantly, the Airport reaffirms its commitment to surrounding neighborhoods. The existing 66.95-acre airport-owned mitigation area, established as a buffer between the Airport and adjacent residential neighborhoods, will remain untouched. Melbourne Orlando International Airport continues to operate without any negative noise impact to nearby areas, a reflection of its responsible operational practices and community-oriented planning.

Funding for the land purchase will be provided through the Airport’s cash reserves and a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation. With ratification by the Authority, the item will now be forwarded to the Melbourne City Council for final approval.
