Fire Department Recognizes Local Citizen for Saving a Life

Post Date:02/25/2020 12:25 PM

Last November, Shaelyn Trowell was enjoying the day at Andretti Thrill Park when she saw a man collapse. She immediately rushed to his aid and performed CPR on him until emergency responders from the Melbourne Fire Department arrived. The man was transported the hospital and has since fully recovered from the incident.

“Because Mrs. Trowell stepped in and immediately rendered aid until our crews could arrive, he was able to make a full recovery,” said Melbourne Fire Department Lieutenant Andy Eyster.

The crews from Fire Station 78, wanted to formally thank and recognize Mrs. Trowell for her life-saving efforts. On Sunday, February 23, they held a small ceremony to honor her at the fire station where she was reunited with the man she saved, Robert Phelps.

CPR – or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation – is an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. According to the American Heart Association, immediate CPR can double or triple chances of survival after cardiac arrest.

The Melbourne Fire Department encourages everyone to learn more about CPR. In an emergency, every second counts. More information about CPR, including a training database, is available on the American Heart Association's website
