On May 31, the Fire Department presented Unit Citations to recognize outstanding work on two recent fires in the City of Melbourne.

On April 3, 2018, units were dispatched to 2020 Canopy Drive for a reported structure fire. FF Carlos Torres Vazquez and FF Ryan White were crew members of first unit to arrive on scene. They took immediate action to ensure the safety of the occupants and then used a water can to keep the fire confined to room of origin. Their quick action and skills helped to limit the loss of property.

On April 7, 2018, crews were dispatched to extinguish a brush fire near Jones Road. As it was in a heavily wooded area, crews were required to advance on foot to combat the fire. Dry conditions and high winds accelerated the fire and it quickly advanced past the fire line consuming approximately 45 acres before it was brought under control.  Environmental conditions could have escalated the fire further; however, because of the aggressive efforts of all personnel involved in the extinguishing of this large brush fire, fire loss was limited to two vehicles, a pole barn, and a residential garage.
