Permanent Road Closure: Westernmost Portion of Eau Gallie Blvd./Sarno Rd.
The westernmost segment of Eau Gallie Boulevard/Sarno Road, which lies between the edge of Lake Washington and approximately 1.75 miles west of Interstate 95, has been permanently closed. It is no longer a public right of way; therefore, the general public is no longer allowed on this private drive or on the private property surrounding the private drive.
The land here has become the Lake Washington Mitigation Bank, which is permitted by the St. Johns River Water Management District and the Army Corps of Engineers. The mitigation bank will be conducting ecological restoration activities on this site, including removing trash, removing invasive plants and conducting prescribed burning.
A mitigation bank is a wetland or upland that is restored or improved in order to offset or "mitigate" the loss of wetlands or uplands to development. See the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's website for a more detailed explanation of mitigation banking.
