Yard Trash
Melbourne residents began separating
yard trash from household trash in 1992, allowing the recycling of plant
material and preserving landfill space. The material you provide is recycled
into mulch which is available for free at the Sarno Landfill. Call (321) 255-4365 to
arrange a pickup time.
Yard trash is collected on Monday OR
Thursday, depending on your location. Call the recycling hotline at (321) 953-6302 for your yard trash day.
Set-out Rules:
Set your yard trash
out once a week on the designated day in reusable containers such as standard,
32-gallon trash cans. Containers can not exceed 40-gallons in capacity and
can weigh no more than 50-pounds when filled.
Plastic bags are NOT accepted. Loose materials, such as pine needles,
leaves, grass clippings, and twigs, must be in reusable garbage cans. Place yard trash within four feet of the curb
or edge of a street surface, and adjacent to the driveway. Please DO NOT block
the use of sidewalks. Place yard trash curbside between 5 p.m. on the day before
collection and 6:30 a.m. on collection day.
Yard waste includes grass clippings, tree
trimmings, weeds, and leaves. Please DO NOT include other wood, such as lumber.
These materials can contaminate the mulch created for recycling. Tree trunks or branches must be less than
four feet long, and no heavier than 50 pounds. Branches and palm fronds should be
stacked uniformly at the curb for collection on your yard trash day.
Preparing for
Hurricane Season
During summer and early fall, when hurricanes can bring high winds and heavy
rains to Melbourne, residents and businesses are asked to take special care in
the handling of yard waste. For instance, it is best to trim trees
prior to the hurricane season to remove limbs that might break off during high
winds. Once a hurricane
threat is approaching, everyone is asked to delay any landscape trimming until
after the threat has passed. If yard waste is on hand, avoid placing it at the
curb, since the material could potentially clog drainage structures or be picked
up by high winds. If a hurricane threat causes the closing of the Brevard
County landfills, collections by Waste Management will have to stop at that
time.
All residents are asked to
avoid placing yard waste curbside in a way that may block drainage in
the event of heavy rains, or in a way that will allow material to be
washed into storm drainage structures. |
