- Yard waste is NOT accepted in plastic bags.
- When placing yard waste at the curb for collection, do not place it on or in storm drains or in any manner that could obstruct drainage.
- Make sure your yard trash is free of any other debris that is not yard waste (such as wood fencing, doors, landscaping timbers, etc.).

During summer and early fall, when hurricanes can bring high winds and heavy rains to Melbourne, residents and businesses are asked to take special care in the handling of yard waste. For instance, it is best to trim trees prior to the hurricane season to remove limbs that might break off during high winds.
Once a hurricane threat is approaching, everyone is asked to delay any landscape trimming until after the threat has passed. If yard waste is on hand, avoid placing it at the curb, since the material could potentially clog drainage structures or be picked up by high winds. If a hurricane threat causes the closing of the Brevard County landfills, collections by Waste Management will have to stop at that time.
All residents are asked to avoid placing yard waste curbside in a way that may block drainage in the event of heavy rains, or in a way that will allow material to be washed into storm drainage structures.
Garbage will be collected as follows:
- Tuesdays and Fridays from the north side of Sarno Road to the northern City limits.
- Mondays and Thursdays from the south side of Sarno Road to the southern City limits.
- Beachside collections will also be on Mondays and Thursdays.
PLEASE NOTE: Solid waste collection service is not available on traditional holidays due to the closing of the Sarno Landfill disposal site, which is operated by Brevard County. The days on which scheduled collections will not be available are Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
- Fridays from the north side of Lake Washington Road to the northern City limits.
- Tuesdays from the south side of Lake Washington Road to the north side of Sarno Road.
- Thursdays from the south side of Sarno Road to the north side of U.S. 192, and including the beachside portions of Melbourne.
- Mondays from the south side of U.S. 192 to the southern City limits.
All recycling materials will be collected on Wednesdays.
The program will help Melbourne comply with the new state 75% recycling goal, to be achieved by the year 2020. The carts are made from 50% recycled material.
Recycling is in a single-stream collection, which means that items do not need to be sorted.
The co-mingled recycling items will be transported to a materials recovery facility for sorting and transporting to various markets.
The cart with the yellow lid is to be used for recycling only. The following items can be placed in your cart :
- Newspapers
- Magazines
- Phone books
- Catalogs
- Paper bags
- Envelopes (including those with windows)
- Paper
- Junk mail
- Paperboard boxes
- Corrugated cardboard boxes (broken down). If you have a large quantity of cardboard boxes, break them down and put them next to the recycling cart on collection day.
- Milk and juice cartons
Please keep these items dry and remove plastic bags, which can cause the automated sorting system to fail.
Recycle bottles with necks. Please rinse the bottles before placing them in your cart. Most bottles are included, such as water and other beverage bottles, laundry detergent bottles, bleach bottles, shampoo bottles, etc. Do not include bottles that contained automotive products, pool chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers or any other household hazardous waste.
Lightly rinse glass jars and bottles and throw the lids away. Do not include window glass, ceramic cups or dishes, light bulbs, mirrors or broken glass.
Lightly rinse beverage and food cans. Empty aerosol cans are accepted. Clean aluminum foil and disposable aluminum pans can also be placed in your recycling cart.
