Council Member Yvonne Minus was appointed to serve on the Melbourne City Council on January 16, 2014. She represents District 3, which is bounded by Babcock Street on the west, Lipscomb Street and the Indian River Lagoon on the north and east, and the city limit to the south. Council Member Minus is a 33-year resident of Melbourne who worked at a major company in south Brevard County for more than 27 years. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia. She graduated from Riverview High School and Sarasota Vocational School in Sarasota, Florida, and Marsh Draughon College in Atlanta, Georgia.
Council Member Minus served on the Melbourne Citizens Advisory Board from June 2002 until she was appointed to the City Council. She served as the board's Vice-Chairman for four years.
Council Member Minus has served as president of the Melbourne Police Community Relations Council (MPCRC) since January 2007. The MPCRC meets on the second Thursday
of each month at 7 p.m. at Carver Park Community Center on odd-numbered months and at Grant Street Community Center on even-numbered months. The MPCRC listens to residents' concerns, and the Melbourne Police Department follows up on reported issues and gives an update at the next meeting. Statistics on crime, drugs, burglaries, prostitution and other issues the MPCRC faces are provided quarterly.
Council Member Minus has served as president of the South Brevard County Task Force (SBCTF) since January 2007. The Council mentors and assists at-risk youth in the community and provides free annual workshops that address bullying, crime, and youth development issues.
Council Member Minus is President of Piper Gardner American Legion Auxiliary 191 in Melbourne where she has been a member since 1984. She is a life member and past secretary of the South Brevard Branch NAACP-Melbourne where she received the prestigious Presidential Award on two occasions for outstanding service to the branch and the community. Council Member Minus is also a member of several fraternal organizations that serve the community and the state of Florida.
Council Member Minus has been a faithful member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Melbourne for more than 30 years. She has served as Usher Ministry No. 1 president for 14 years. She also serves as secretary of the Macedonia Community Development Corporation of South Brevard (MCDC) board and is a member of the church personnel committee. Council Member Minus is secretary of the Mount Zion Northeast Coast Missionary Baptist District Association of Florida Inc. (MZNEC).
Council Member Minus and husband James married in October 1999. They have one daughter, Yolanda; two sons, Clifford and James Jr.; six grandsons; and one beautiful great-granddaughter.
