Kathy Meehan was elected from Melbourne's District 3, which is bounded by Babcock Street on the west, Lipscomb Street and the Indian River Lagoon on the north and east, and the city limit to the south. Link to Map of Districts. She was first elected in November of 2004. Her current City Council term will be completed in November of 2012. Council Member Meehan has been appointed by the City Council to represent Melbourne as a member of the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization.
Council Member Meehan was selected by her fellow council members to serve one-year terms as vice mayor in 2007 and 2010. Council Member Meehan is President of the Board of Directors for the Space Coast League of Cities for 2009-2010. She encourages everyone to attend the Melbourne Police Community Relations Council every second Thursday of the month.
Council Member Meehan is a native of Montreal, Canada. She became a naturalized American Citizen in 1967, and has lived in Melbourne since 1979. She graduated from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1992 with honors with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology after earning her Associate in Arts Degree from Brevard Community College.
Prior to election to the City Council, Council Member Meehan had served the City as a member of the Planning and Zoning Board. She is employed as a Sales Representative with Meehan's Office Products and has also worked as a Case Manager with Community Care for the Elderly.
Service: Council Member Meehan has long been active in community service. She was a volunteer on the Melbourne Downtown Progress Association Board of Directors from 1987 to 1991, and from 1993 to 1998 served on the Melbourne Police Community Relations Council. Also beginning in 1993, she served as Coordinator with the Melbourne Riverview Crime Watch, continuing in that role until 2000. Beginning in 1994, she served as a volunteer with Neighbors Against Crime, Inc. for 7 years and participated in anti-drug marches led by Leonard Ross and the late Rev. Carol Glanton. She has served on the School Improvement Committee at Hoover Jr. High, and served on the School Improvement Committee at West Shore Jr./Sr. High School. She has since 1997 served with Brevard Brush Strokes.
Council Member Meehan has been married since
1984 to Dennis. The Meehans
are members of Community Chapel of Melbourne Beach. They have a son who attends the
University of Central Florida and a daughter who attends BCC.
