CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS
Under the general direction of the Police Lieutenant, is responsible for the supervision of shift personnel and for the operations of patrol functions during assigned shift. Performs a variety of law enforcement and supervisory tasks required to ensure effective and efficient operations. Performs other work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Oversees assignment of police officers, inspects performance, assists with problems, provides technical direction, resolves personnel problems, provides training as needed, and reviews reports and other administrative activities.
Responds to major emergency calls, particularly those where violence is anticipated; assumes command as required and provides direction to officers and others; oversees law enforcement activities and ensures that serious cases are personally supervised. Prepares and oversees preparation of case information and reports, and reviews all reports written by squad personnel.
Reviews officer reports, prepares reports of shift activities, and prepares annual evaluation of police officers assigned to squad.
Inspects vehicles and equipment on a periodic basis and ensures that all are well maintained.
Attends court hearing and trials, as required.
B. MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Maintain the ability to complete the job tasks of a Patrol Officer.
Listen to instructions from supervisors.
Read and understand laws, ordinances and other legal documents.
Listen to conversations from citizens who have different types of accents.
Review police reports for accuracy and neatness.
Review policies and other technical reports.
Operate computer terminal and C.A.D. system.
Evaluate Police Officers performance.
Respond to and oversee calls for service.
Maintain communications with shift Lieutenant.
Direct traffic, push vehicles, lift heavy objects.
Issue traffic citations, arrest law violators, and deal with mentally ill persons.
Approve manpower requests (vacation leave, military leave, school requests, etc.).
Assist in the development of goals and objectives.
A. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED. Two years police science training or related education. Three years responsible police work, including public contact, law enforcement, and independent operations which may involve a junior officer. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver's license. Applicants may possess a valid out of state driver's license and obtain the Florida license within 10 days of employment

Ability to investigate situations and to prepare written reports.
Ability to make oral presentations.
Ability to physically detain law breakers.
Skill in communication with subordinates.
Skill in operating motor vehicles in hazardous situations.
Skill in using weapons and other police equipment.
C. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Operate motor vehicles, auto, van.
Hear and understand conversation in a normal tone of voice. Use of senses which include sight, smell, hearing and touch.
See and read letters, numbers, words, characters or symbols which are both large and small, as well as identify colors.
Print and draw letters, numbers, words, characters, and symbols - must be legible and understood by others.
Move back and forth and sideways while in a bending, kneeling, or squatting position.
Stay in a bending, kneeling, or squatting position for periods less than ten minutes.
Go from a standing or sitting position to a bending, kneeling or squatting position, or vice versa, periodically.
Learn complex tasks and remember how to complete tasks without assistance, once trained.
Walk, stand, and sit for periods longer than 30 minutes, walk continuously for more than 5 minutes at a time.
Stand in a stationary position for more than 30 minutes at a time. May need to remain seated for more than 30 minutes at a time.
Lift, carry, push or pull items which weight up to 50 pounds.
Carry items for a distance which ranges from 10 feet to no more than 300 yards.
Hold items (weighing between 1 - 10 pounds) for a period less than 10 minutes.
Work at night in dimly lit conditions as necessary during inclement weather.
Must be, or have the ability to be, respirator certified.
