CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS

Under the close supervision of the Head Swim Instructor, performs varied routine duties in teaching swim lessons in accordance with City and Department policies. Work requires flexible hours (mornings and evenings. May be required to perform lifeguard duties when necessary, only if swim instructor is also current in Red Cross lifeguard certification. Must have working cell phone and email address for contact purposes. Performs other work as required.
 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

A.    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Monitors and instructs swimming lessons.

Maintains class attendance and course records.

Performs general housekeeping practices in the aquatic facility.

Ensures the safety of class participants

If Red Cross Lifeguard certified, may be required to perform duties as a lifeguard when necessary.


REQUIREMENTS

A. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Must have current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification and current certification in Red Cross First Aid and CPR for the professional preferred. State of Florida driver’s license required.

B. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of current swimming techniques, CPR and First Aid.

Ability to effectively interpret and implement Red Cross curriculum and guidelines for swim lessons.

Ability to determine the appropriate skill level for participants.

Ability to communicate effectively with the public.

C.    PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to successfully demonstrate all swimming strokes.

Ability to understand and communicate with children.

Ability to lift children up to 50 lbs in the Swim Lesson Program.

Ability to walk, stand, reach, kneel, and lift throughout the working day and participate in activities that require physical dexterity.

Ability to see clearly.

Ability to hear.

Ability to communicate effectively in English.

Ability to work in cold, heat, wetness, and around noise, fumes and odors.
