CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS

Under the supervision of a Recreation Supervisor, monitors minors and performs varied routine duties in assisting with recreation activities and/or a facility. Performs other work as required. Ability to work flexible hours.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

A.    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Opens and secures facilities for events.

Issues equipment, collects fees and memberships, maintains attendance records if required, and assists in ensuring proper care and use of equipment.

Provides instruction and assists in conducting recreational and various sports activities for minors

Assists in enforcing rules and regulations of proper facilities use, keeps score, and maintains orderliness of recreational areas, free of litter

Answers phones and takes messages.    

Performs related work as required.

Performs Janitorial duties as needed.

Performs related clerical work. Drafting flyers and activity schedules on the computer and answers telephones. Provides information on center activities.

Responsible for checking in and checking out of minors in camp program

Helps plan, carry out and evaluate projects and activities for campers

Promote camper participation in ALL activities.

Work with the camp directors and other camp staff to iron out difficulties with facilities, programs and campers.

Have a willingness to play and to make a fool of yourself for the sake of making a kid smile.

The desire and ability to work in a cooperative, team-oriented atmosphere

Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.

Helps maintain order and discipline

Desire and ability to work with children of all ages

Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week.

Activities may include crafts, nature, sports, games, songs, games, swimming, etc. This includes time spent on the bus.

Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter.

Help write and implement a weekly schedule for your camp group.

Demonstrated responsibility, dependability, and being punctual

Must exhibit patience and understanding.

Must be capable of working under pressure in a somewhat disruptive environment.

Ensure the safety, well-being and personal growth of campers. Be an active and supportive member of the Summer Camp team and a positive member of the City of Melbourne staff. Summer Camp Counselors must demonstrate positive, professional role modeling at all times, acting in a manner that is consistent with the City code of conduct and the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the City of Melbourne Parks and Recreation Department.

Requires strong communication skills, positive attitude, initiative, flexibility, dependability, creativity and ability to work and problem solve.

REQUIREMENTS

A.    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age. Minimum of one (1) year of summer camp counselor employment or certified teacher or Recreation Degree or relatable recreation experience, and demonstrated reliability and dependability. Certification in Adult/Child CPR and Standard First Aid preferred. Be able to pass a Level II background check.

B.    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to work effectively with children.

Knowledge of a variety of recreational activities and the rules and regulations governing the play of these games. Also knowledge of how to set up sites for various activities i.e., ballgames, inside table games.

Ability to responsibly oversee the use of a recreational facility.
    
Ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous relationships with the public.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to maintain simple records.

Ability to work flexible hours.

Ability to read and write.

Ability to perform simple clerical work- compiles reports on the computer, draft activity flyers, and answering telephones.

Knowledge and ability to organize group activities as needed.

Ability to set up tables/chairs for various functions and perform janitorial duties

Ability to lift up to 25lbs in various forms

Mental and physical ability to deal with high stress situations and work well under pressure.

Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently.

Ability to support and connect with campers and staff.

Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical abilities to act swiftly in an emergency situation.

Ability and willingness to learn on the job in an environment that changes quickly.

C.    PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift and move 8 ft. tables and chairs.

May be required to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. in various forms.

May be required to sit, stand, or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time.

Ability to walk, run, and participate in activities which requires physical dexterity.

Ability to hear.

Ability to understand and communicate with co-workers and children.

Ability to work around excessive noise and various odors and in areas of cold, heat, dust, dirt, and various odors.

Ability to deal with stressful situations that arise in a normal day such as verbal conflicts or physical fights.

Ability to comprehend and carryout oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous relationships with the public.
