CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS

Under the general supervision of the Parks/Leisure Services Maintenance Superintendent, performs routine semi skilled manual labor in maintenance or reconstruction tasks, using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and equipment. May require vehicle or truck operation. Works with some degree of independence, but work is subject to review while in progress and upon completion. Performs other work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

A.    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Mows, waters, places sod, fertilizes, rakes, and trims hedges.

Trims trees, operates chain saw.

Installs and repairs sprinkler systems.

B.    MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

Pick up parts as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

A.    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred; two years experience at the full performance level in operating various departmental equipment; or an equivalent combination of acceptable training, education, and experience. Requires a valid State of Florida Class B commercial driver’s license with Air brakes. Applicants who possess a valid out of state Class B commercial driver’s license with air brakes must obtain the Florida Class B commercial driver’s license with air brakes within 10 days of employment.

B.    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of occupational safety rules, practices, and traffic laws.

Knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of moderate and heavy diesel and gasoline powered equipment and trucks.

Ability to perform strenuous work in a variety of outdoor weather conditions.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Knowledge of procedure of cemetery maintenance.

Knowledge of operation in the nursery.

C.    PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to see and read written instructions.

Ability to hear and understand verbal commands and instructions.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English.

Ability to lift objects not to exceed 50 lbs. unassisted.

Ability to work with and around herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals which relate to job.

Ability to work around numerous insects as normally found outdoors.

Ability to bend, stoop, walk, and dig as required daily.

Ability to operate machinery for long periods of time.

Ability to work in cramped areas, and in various undesirable weather conditions.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Ability to work with the emotionally distressed public.
