CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS
Under the general supervision of a Parks Maintenance Supervisor, performs a wide range of custodial tasks involved with the cleaning and maintenance of public grounds and parks, including park facilities. Performs other work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Sweeps, mops, polishes and vacuums.
Washes walls, windows, woodwork, and mirrors.
Cleans and sanitizes all park rest rooms and fixtures: checks and stocks supplies; ensures that all lavatory
installations are working and reports those that need repair.
Cleans park shelters, picnic tables, grills, sand areas, playgrounds and athletic courts.
Empties trash cans and garbage and reline cans with liners.
Sets up tables and chairs for scheduled events.
Performs litter control from around buildings and grounds including picking up barrels/bags and loading them onto the truck.
Drives a city vehicle to various work sites performing custodial duties.
Inspects facilities, equipment and property for signs of wear, damage or vandalism.
Completes daily logs and reports.
A. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred. Some experience in janitorial or related custodial work and ability to
understand and follow oral and written instructions, or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Valid
Florida driver's license is required. Applicants who possess a valid out of state driver’s license must obtain the
Florida driver’s license within 10 days of employment.
B. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of building cleaning processes, supplies, and equipment.
Knowledge of public relations skills in dealing with the public.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to read directions as provided on cleaning supplies.
Ability to work outdoors and tolerate various environmental conditions and weather extremes for extended periods of time.
Ability to perform routine physical custodial duties without immediate supervision.
Ability to keep organized records and reports
Ability to recognize priorities and meet deadlines.
Ability to make decision objectively based on customer service and fiscal constraint.
Ability to operate hand tools and power equipment.
Ability to work effectively with other employees.
Ability to work weekends and holidays.
C. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to hear, speak and understand conversation in English in a normal tone of voice.
Ability to see and read.
Ability to use small hand tools which require the use of hands, wrists, and fingers.
Ability to move back and forth and sideways while in a bending, kneeling, or squatting position.
Ability to stay in a bending, kneeling, or squatting position for periods less than 10 minutes.
Ability to go from a standing or sitting position to a bending, kneeling, or squatting position, or vice-versa, periodically.
Ability to walk, stand, and sit for periods longer than 30 minutes but not to exceed 8 hours consecutively.
Ability to walk continuously for more than 5 minutes at a time throughout the working day.
Ability to lift, carry, push and pull items which weigh up to 50 pounds over uneven terrain, up/down stairs or ladders.
Ability to carry items for a distance which ranges from 10 feet to no more than 300 yards.
Ability to lift and/or carry items which are considered awkward to grasp or hold on to.
Ability to lift items (weighing no more than 50 pounds) above the head or down from over the head.
Ability to hold items (weighing 1 to 50 pounds) for a period less than 10 minutes.
Ability to work in undesirable conditions including dust, dirt, heat, humidity, and chemicals.
