CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS
Under the general direction of the Property Maintenance Supervisor, performs responsible journeyman level work in building repair, maintenance and remodeling, and in the construction of finished cabinets. Performs other work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs maintenance, repair, and remodeling work throughout the City, working in all departments to maintain or improve facilities including the construction and repair of cabinets, desks, doors and walls, works with formica installation.
Moves equipment, furniture, and boxes as needed.
Makes minor electrical repairs and installations.
Determines materials needed to complete specific work projects and seeks competitive prices for supplies. Works from simple blueprints or makes drawings of completed work when appropriate.
Makes plumbing repairs and installations.
Operates a variety of hand tools and equipment including a drill, saw, grinder, welder, and shovel.
Drives and operates a variety of City vehicles including utility truck and bucket truck. Picks up parts and supplies when necessary.
B. MARGINAL FUNCTIONSInstalls Christmas decorations and assists in preparation for special events at the Auditorium.May be required to oversee other maintenance employees on carpentry projects.
A. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCEHigh school diploma or G.E.D. High school or vocational training and substantial practical experience in carpentry and general trades work. Valid Florida Commercial Drivers license Class B with air brakes and certificate of DOT Traffic Zone Training required, or the ability to obtain within sixty days of hire.
B. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of building construction codes and ordinances.
Knowledge of techniques of carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and general trades work.
Ability to read and develop blueprints and drawings.
Skill in the use of a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools.
Skill in working with cabinets, formica and laminates.
Ability to work regularly scheduled hours.
C. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTSAbility to lift loads up to 50 lbs. above the head for brief periods of time.
Ability to work at heights of up to 55 feet.
Ability to climb up and down ladders or stairs while carrying up to 50 lbs.
With the assistance of another worker, ability to load and unload objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
Ability to lift or carry items which may be considered unwieldy or awkward to grasp.
Ability to bend, kneel, squat, and move sideways while doing so, for periods of up to 10 minutes throughout a working day.
Ability to walk, stand or sit for periods of more than 30 minutes, but not for more than 8 consecutive hours.
Ability to switch from a standing or sitting position to a kneeling, squatting or bending position repeatedly.
Ability to hold items which weigh up to 10 lbs. for a period of time not to exceed 10 minutes.
Ability to work in small, enclosed, or partially enclosed areas.
Ability to work in adverse weather conditions such as heat, humidity, cold, and rain; work around unpleasant conditions such as fumes, odors and chemicals; work around excessive noise for long periods of time not to exceed 8 hours consecutively; and work around dirt and dust. Such conditions may occasionally be determined as unsanitary and hazardous.
Ability to identify colors.
Ability to drive and operate City vehicles.
Ability to hear and comprehend conversation spoken at various levels and rates of speed.
Ability to see, read, and comprehend written communication in English of all sizes.
Ability to print and use cursive writing; write and draw letters, words, characters and symbols.
Ability to learn and remember simple and complex tasks and perform job requirements with limited direction.
Ability to walk continuously for more than 10 minutes at one time.
Ability to lift, carry, push or pull items which weigh up to 50 lbs.
Ability to carry items for long distances not to exceed 300 yards.
Ability to push or pull items for distances not to exceed 20 feet, such levels may be inclining, level, or declining.
Requires the use of certain chemicals or chemical processes.
