CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS

Under the general supervision of the Senior Signage Technician, performs skilled tasks in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic control signage and pavement markings. Incumbent performs a variety of tasks requiring application of judgement based on knowledge gained through experience and training. Work is performed according to the guidelines of the State of Florida Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Ability to work nights and weekends. Work is reviewed through results obtained. Performs other duties as needed.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Manufactures traffic-related signs and banners through use of computerized manufacturing equipment, repairs damaged signs, and erects signs.

Paints curbs and lines with striping machine, paints crosswalks, and marks parking lots; removes paint line. Applies thermoplastic road markings by use of thermoplastic equipment.

Barricades streets and lots for City functions and special events.

Inputs and edits GIS data for computerized sign inventory program.

Requests locates for signage installation utilizing Sunshine one-call system.

 

REQUIREMENTS

A. TRAINING AND EDUCATION

High school diploma supplemented by a dependable work record and 36 months’ experience in signage manufacturing and installation. Requires FDOT approved Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic Certification and IMSA Signs and Markings—Level I, Level II, and Level III certifications. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver’s license. Applicants who possess a valid out of state driver’s license must obtain the Florida driver’s license within 10 days of employment.

Must have a proven record of dependability and responsibility.

 

B. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of specs, layouts, road markings at intersections such as stop bars, crosswalks, and arrows.

Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.

Knowledge of the importance of the traffic safety function within the City.

Knowledge of pavement marking and traffic sign materials.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and other governmental agencies.

Ability to use a sign and manufacturing computer, striping machine, and related power equipment (thermo-equipment).

Ability to retrieve and edit data for signage and GIS coordinates with the use of a personal computer.

Ability to work with other City departments to coordinate work and safety requirements.

Ability to operate City vehicles, equipment, and tools.

Knowledge of codes and regulations for installing traffic control devices within municipalities (State of Florida MUTCD Manual).

Knowledge of maintenance of traffic plans and set up for special events.

Ability to read engineering plans for the installation of traffic control devices.

Ability to complete special projects.

Ability to formulate ideas and express oneself clearly and precisely.

C. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to hear, speak, and understand conversation in English that is spoken at various tones of voices.

Ability to see and read letters, words, characters, and symbols of various sizes.

Ability to print or write cursive letters, numbers, words, characters, and symbols that are legible and easily understood.

Ability to learn and remember simple and complex tasks once trained.

Ability to walk, stand, or sit for long periods of time, not to exceed 8 hours consecutively.

Ability to move up and down stairs and ladders throughout the working day.

Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items which weigh up to 50 lbs. over surfaces that may be at an incline or decline.

Ability to carry items for a distance not to exceed 300 yards.

Ability to lift and carry items which may be considered unwieldy and awkward to grasp or hold.

Ability to bend, kneel, or squat for periods not to exceed 10 minutes.

Ability to go from standing or sitting position to a bending, kneeling, or squatting position or vise versa throughout the working day.

Ability to move back and forth and sideways while in a bending, kneeling, or squatting position.

Ability to work in undesirable conditions such as dirt, dust, heat, cold, fumes, odors, excessive noise, wetness, humidity, and other unpleasant weather conditions.

Ability to work under stressful conditions while working on signs and traffic signals in heavy traffic.
