The summer rainy season ban on fertilizer use in the City of Melbourne goes into effect on Wednesday, June 1. The ban lasts until September 30.

It is also illegal to blow grass clippings into streets or stormwater drains in the City of Melbourne at any time of the year. Instead, clippings should be blown back into yards, bagged or composted.

“With the algae bloom and fish kill that recently occurred, residents need to be conscious of how fertilizing during the rainy season and blowing grass clippings into the stormwater system adversely impact the Indian River Lagoon,” said Melbourne City Engineer Jenni Lamb.

Penalties include a fine of $200 for violating either of the ordinances.
