On Wednesday, June 21, 2018 at approximately 9:45PM, Melbourne Police Officers responded to Del’s Freez, located at 402 N. Harbor City Blvd, regarding and armed robbery. Upon arrival they learned that a black male approached the window and began placing an order. While in process of placing an order, he produced a hand gun and demanded money. When the clerks backed away from the window, the suspect fired a single shot through the open ordering window. The shot struck the ground between the two employees as they were complying with his demands. The suspect then fled southbound on foot with cash taken in the robbery. A search was conducted involving multiple police units, canine, and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit, but the suspect was not located.
The Melbourne Police Department Criminal Investigations Division began vigorously working the case and following up on suspect leads. Melbourne Police Officer Shawn Kirby, currently assigned to the “Game-Over Task Force” discovered a link involving a possible suspect staying in Palm Bay who was wanted for an outstanding warrant on parole violations from North Carolina. The GOTF tracked and arrested the suspect, Antonio McGhee, for the warrant and Melbourne detectives then discovered evidentiary items linking McGhee to not only the Del’s Freez case, but also linking him to Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and West Melbourne Police Department cases.
McGhee was transported to BCSO on the warrant and has subsequently been charged with Armed Robbery, Aggravated Assault with a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon, and Shooting into an Occupied Building. This arrest was the culmination of teamwork and cooperation between agencies and excellent investigations by the involved officers and detectives resulting in the removal of a dangerous felon from the streets.
