“Fall Back” Reminders: Change Lawn Watering & Check Smoke Alarms

Post Date:11/02/2017 2:12 PM

Eastern Standard Time begins this Sunday, November 5. As you take a moment to change your clocks, now is a good time to also think about these important household practices:

Change Your Lawn-watering Schedule

Lawn-watering restrictions change this Sunday. During Eastern Standard Time (first Sunday in November until the second Sunday in March) irrigation is limited to no more than one day per week on scheduled days:

  • Residential irrigation is allowed on Saturday at addresses that end in an odd number or have no address.
  • Residential irrigation is allowed on Sunday at addresses that end in an even number.
  • Nonresidential irrigation is allowed on Tuesday.

For more information about watering restrictions, visit St. Johns River Water Management District’s Website.

Check Your Smoke Alarm

Early notification of a fire in your home is the best way to protect you and your family because most people who die in house fires die from smoke inhalation, not from the fire itself. The earlier you can be alerted and get out the safer you will be. That’s why it is so important to be sure your smoke detectors are working properly. If you have a smoke detector that takes a 9-Volt battery, you should change the battery at least twice a year. If your smoke alarm is more than 10 years old, you should consider replacing it with a new one. For more information and guidance on proper installation and testing of smoke alarms, visit the National Fire Protection Agency’s website.
