Event: Grand Theft Motor Vehicle (Motorcycle)

Date/Time of Event: June 22, 2017 at 8:25 pm
Location of Event: Sunoco Gas Station, 1755 North Harbor City Boulevard, Melbourne, FL 32935

On the night of June 21, a stolen motorcycle was recovered at the Sunoco after the motorcycle’s owner saw it idling in a parking spot. The motorcycle’s ignition switch was damaged consistent with a method used to steal vehicles. Sunoco provided surveillance footage of the potential suspect who was wearing an orange shirt, black/white camouflaged pants, had a full beard, and longer hair. Responding units observed someone fitting this clothing and facial description running near Eau Gallie Boulevard and US1 toward the residence of 703 Old Oak Street. This residence has been the location of numerous citizen complaints for illegal drug and other criminal activities.

Evidence of recent drug activity was observed on scene by responding units. The officers’ observations of these items resulted in a search warrant and the eventual discovery of 2.4 gm of heroin, 1 AK47 replica, ammunition, several items of drug paraphernalia, and a second stolen motorcycle. The second stolen motorcycle was missing parts consistent with ‘chop-shop’ style activity. The narcotics investigation is still ongoing.

On June 22, continued investigation by the original patrol officers led to the discovery that one of the residents was in fact the same person seen riding the stolen motorcycle at Sunoco. The suspect Hugh A. Kelly 09/20/1981 took extensive efforts (changing clothes, shaving his beard, and cutting several inches of hair) to conceal his identity, evade apprehension and elude criminal prosecution. The collective efforts of the officers on scene and the detectives called out positively impacted both the motorcycle owners and Melbourne citizenry aggrieved by the ongoing criminal activity near their homes.

Primary Charges: Grand Theft Motor Vehicle, Resisting without Violence, Driving While License Suspended (3 Prior Convictions), & No Motorcycle Endorcement

The Melbourne Police Department continues to seek out and investigate drug activity within the community.
