New Police Chief Begins Service
David Gillespie was sworn in as Melbourne’s new Chief of Police during the June 13 City Council Meeting. Circuit Court Judge David Dugan performed the swearing-in ceremony.
Gillespie has extensive experience in community policing, youth programs and crime prevention initiatives. Before becoming Melbourne Police Chief he was the Fifth District Commander of the Montgomery County (MD) Police Department, which serves 200,000 citizens in a 143 square-mile area. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice from the University of Maryland and a master’s of science degree in management from Johns Hopkins University.
He is replacing Chief Steve Mimbs who retired from the Melbourne Police Department this month after 37 years of service.
