Spring Ahead Reminders: Change Lawn Watering Schedule; Check Smoke Detectors This Weekend

Post Date:03/09/2017 9:05 AM

Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday, March 12. As you take a moment to change your clocks, now is a good time to review important household practices:

Change your lawn-watering schedule. Lawn-watering restrictions change this Sunday. During Daylight Saving Time irrigation is limited to no more than two days per week on scheduled days. Residential irrigation is allowed on Wednesdays and Saturdays at addresses that end in an odd number or have no address and on Thursdays and Sundays at addresses that end in an even number. Nonresidential irrigation is allowed on Tuesday and Friday. For more information about watering restrictions, visit the St. Johns River Water Management District’s website.

Check your smoke detector. Testing your smoke detectors on a regular basis is a simple life-saving step that everyone should take. Changing smoke detector batteries at least twice a year in older detectors with 9 volt batteries has been recommended for years. Newer smoke detectors have 10-year lithium ion batteries, which eliminates the need to change the battery. However, you should still test them periodically. If smoke detectors are tested and batteries changed, if necessary, each time we change our clocks you will have a greater confidence that your smoke detectors should perform during an actual fire. A properly working smoke alarm can give you the extra seconds you need to escape a fire — especially at night when most people are asleep. For more information and guidance on proper installation and testing of smoke alarms, visit the National Fire Protection Agency’s website.
