A new Play Melbourne program encouraging children’s fitness and health officially kicks off on February 17 at Riverview Park in Melbourne.

In the new “Play Date” program a different group of elementary school students will spend a few hours at Riverview Park each month, where they’ll climb on the new playground equipment, play tag and other outdoor games, and will enjoy a healthy lunch under the shaded pavilion. Harbor City Elementary students will participate in the first Play Date on Feb. 17.

“The goal of the Play Date program is to showcase Riverview Park’s new amenities and revitalization efforts while encouraging fitness and wellness among elementary school-aged kids,” said Kevin Briski, Director of Play Melbourne Parks & Recreation.

The idea for the program sprang from two organized field trips to the park that took place last fall with University Elementary and Palm Bay Elementary. Positive feedback from the teachers and the kids encouraged Play Melbourne and Brevard Public Schools to look for ways to formalize the program and bring more kids in on a regular basis. To emphasize good nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle, Health First has agreed to sponsor a healthy lunch for kids to enjoy at each of the Play Dates.

“It's rare nowadays for kids to just PLAY,” said Barbi Miller, Palm Bay Elementary Teacher of Gifted Students and Brevard Public Schools Partners in Education Coordinator. “The Play Date program gives our students the opportunity to engage with new exciting state-of-the-art equipment, which motivates them to get up, move, and ultimately to develop healthier habits.”

The Play Date program has been made possible by the partnership of Play Melbourne Parks & Recreation, Brevard Public Schools Partners in Education Program and Health First.
