Mayor Meehan and Vice Mayor Porsi present award for 40 years of service to Charles Jackson

Last night citizens who serve as volunteer board members were honored for their years of service to the City of Melbourne during the Annual Board Reception.

“The city’s advisory boards provide an avenue for its citizens to participate in the governing process,” said City Manager Mike McNees. “Our current volunteer board members provide vital input to the City Council on a number of local issues and show a tremendous dedication to the well-being of the city through their many years of service.”

In 2016, approximately 131 residents served on 17 standing boards and committees that guide a range of city services from architectural standards and affordable housing to code enforcement and pension planning. Many of the city’s board members have served for multiple years — even decades. Combined, their years of service total more than 1,000.

Charles Jackson received a special award last night in recognition of his 40 years of service on the Zoning Board of Adjustment. Mr. Jackson (pictured above center with Mayor Kathy Meehan to his left and Vice Mayor Dan Porsi to his right) is the city’s longest serving board member.
